Destin vacation FAQ
The questions everyone asks before the trip.
When is the best time to visit Destin?
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots. May and October bring warm water, smaller crowds, and better prices. Summer is peak season, so book early and expect company.
How do you get to Crab Island?
Crab Island is a shallow sandbar in the bay, so you need a boat. Rent a pontoon, book a shuttle, or paddle over on a calm day. Mornings have the clearest water.
What do the beach flag colors mean?
Green means calm. Yellow means use caution. One red flag means dangerous surf. Purple means jellyfish or other marine life. Two red flags mean the water is closed — stay on the sand.
Is Destin good for families with kids?
Yes. Destin has a big water park, mini golf, dolphin cruises, calm morning surf, and a quiet state park beach. The book has a whole chapter on kid-friendly Destin.
How warm is the water in Destin?
The Gulf reaches the mid 80s F in summer. Spring and fall run in the 70s. Winter dips into the 60s, which is wetsuit weather for most people.
Why is it the 'World's Luckiest Fishing Village'?
Deep Gulf water sits unusually close to shore here, so the big fish are a short boat ride away. The nickname stuck more than a century ago — Chapter 1 tells the whole story.
